You can start playing around with free custom templates made by other users. For example you can use this template:
http://www.gauson.com/blog/2009/01/05/streamy-lights-template/
which in my opinion looks a lot more elegant than the templates offered by blogspot, but that's just me.
There are countless templates around the web so it could take quite some time to discover one that you really like. Just Google "blogspot template".
